Brief History of Mushroom Coffee

Mushroom coffee has a rich history that dates back centuries, with its roots in ancient China and Europe. The concept of blending mushrooms with coffee or other beverages was initially born out of necessity, serving as a sustainable and affordable alternative to traditional coffee. During World War II, for instance, Finns ingeniously mixed coffee with chaga mushrooms to stretch their coffee supplies. This practice not only made their coffee last longer but also introduced them to the health benefits of chaga mushrooms.

In recent years, mushroom coffee has experienced a significant resurgence in popularity. Modern consumers are increasingly drawn to its unique combination of flavor and health benefits. Today, many companies offer a wide range of mushroom coffee blends, incorporating various medicinal mushrooms like reishi, lion’s mane, and cordyceps. These blends aim to provide a balanced energy boost and support overall well-being, making mushroom coffee a trendy and health-conscious choice for many.

What Does Mushroom Coffee Taste Like?

Mushroom coffee has a slightly earthy flavor to it because of its inclusion of mushrooms, but it has the same texture as regular coffee. The unique blend combines ground coffee beans with medicinal mushrooms, creating a beverage that retains the flavor of regular coffee while offering potential health benefits. Although, it is very easy to disguise the earthy flavor by adding creamer, flavoring, or any other ingredients you desire. It is just like making your regular coffee; some people like it black and bitter, and some add creamer and such to disguise the bitter taste.

Benefits of Drinking Mushroom Coffee

Drinking mushroom coffee can offer a variety of potential health benefits that go beyond the typical perks of regular coffee. Most mushroom coffee blends offer lower caffeine alternatives to traditional coffee, supporting wellness through adaptogenic properties while maintaining rich flavors, making them suitable for those looking to reduce caffeine intake without sacrificing taste. Here are some of the key advantages:

  • Improved Cognitive Function and Focus: The inclusion of lion’s mane mushrooms in many mushroom coffee blends is known to support brain health, potentially enhancing memory, focus, and overall cognitive function.

  • Enhanced Immune System Function: Mushrooms like chaga and reishi are renowned for their immune-boosting properties, helping to strengthen your body’s natural defenses.

  • Reduced Stress and Anxiety Levels: Reishi mushrooms are often used for their calming effects, which can help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.

  • Improved Mood and Overall Sense of Well-Being: The adaptogenic properties of certain mushrooms can help balance your mood and improve your overall sense of well-being.

  • Potential Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Effects: Many medicinal mushrooms have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help protect your body from oxidative stress and inflammation.

  • May Help to Improve Sleep Quality: Reishi mushrooms, in particular, are known for their ability to promote better sleep quality, helping you to wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

While these potential benefits are promising, it’s important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the effects of mushroom coffee on human health. However, incorporating mushroom coffee into your daily routine could be a delicious and easy way to support your overall well-being.

How Mushroom Coffee is Made

The process of making mushroom coffee involves several meticulous steps to ensure that the final product is both flavorful and packed with health benefits. Here's a closer look at how mushroom coffee is made:

  1. Harvesting: The journey begins with the careful harvesting of medicinal mushrooms. These mushrooms are then dried to preserve their potency and ensure they retain their beneficial compounds.

  2. Extraction: Once dried, the mushrooms undergo an extraction process using solvents like hot water or ethanol. This step is crucial as it releases the bioactive compounds that provide the health benefits associated with medicinal mushrooms.

  3. Infusion: The extracted compounds are then infused into high-quality coffee beans, typically Arabica or Robusta. This infusion process allows the coffee beans to absorb the beneficial properties of the mushrooms.

  4. Roasting: The infused coffee beans are roasted to perfection, bringing out the desired flavor and aroma. This step is essential to ensure that the coffee retains its rich, robust taste while incorporating the earthy notes of the mushrooms.

  5. Grinding: Finally, the roasted coffee beans are ground into a fine powder, ready to be brewed into a delicious cup of mushroom coffee.

This meticulous process ensures that each cup of mushroom coffee is not only enjoyable but also packed with the potential health benefits of medicinal mushrooms.

Best Mushroom Coffee Brands:

1. Ryze Mushroom Coffee.

Perfect coffee alternative- 190,000+ 5 star reviews

Smooth flavor

Instant Coffee so it’s easy to include in your morning routine

Ryze is mixed with its blend of organic coffee beans and a mix of mushrooms like Lion’s mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, shiitake mushrooms, Turkey Tail, and Reishi.

When consuming Ryze Mushroom Coffee, it’s important to consider how much mushroom coffee you drink, as the appropriate amount can vary based on individual preferences and desired benefits.

Cons:

  • It's a little expensive, especially if you're a tight-budget student.

    • Mixed with multiple mushrooms (You can't take one specific mushroom)

    • Mixed reviews due to problems with their automatic subscription plan

Quality Rating: 8.5/10.

Price: $$.

Flavor: 8/10.

Ryze Coffee was one of the first mushroom coffees I tried, and it wasn't bad. I like how it didn't have a bitter taste, and it did not give me the headache that regular coffee sometimes gives. Ryze is mixed with its blend of organic coffee beans and a mix of mushrooms like Lion's mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, Shiitake, Turkey Tail, and Reishi. Although the mushrooms in this blend are high in nutrients, the benefits of RYZE have yet to be scientifically proven. Furthermore, RYZE's mushroom serving amounts remain lower than those of other brands employed in clinical research, demonstrating possible health benefits. The lack of openness about dosage per species of mushroom complicates determining how these additives may affect (or ultimately help) consumer health. I would say I experienced the benefits they claim, but nothing drastic; if you want to experience the real benefits of mushrooms, you should use powders or extracts. Although it was a very pleasant drink, I would still recommend it over regular coffee. Check out more what we think here!

2. Everyday Dose

Pros:

  • 55,000+ 5-star reviews

  • Mild, smooth flavor that will not overpower your taste receptors.

  • Ideal for mornings when you need a little additional energy to get through your classes and side hustles

  • Creamy coffee flavor

For those who drink mushroom coffee regularly, Everyday Dose offers a mild, smooth flavor that can easily be incorporated into your daily routine.

Cons:

This is honestly one of my favorite brands as they have the best tasting coffee and I felt great effects when drinking it. The only cons about Everyday Dose is that they only include 2 mushrooms compared to 6+ like its competitors. Although their focus on only Lion's mane and Chaga proves to be more potent and high quality than other brands so less types of mushrooms isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's better to have 2 high quality ingredients than a blend of multiple low quality ingredients like most mushroom brands.

Quality Rating: 8.5/10.

Price: $.

Flavor: 9.5/10.

Everyday Dose is another top mushroom coffee brand that has been popping up all over social media, so we decided to give it a try. Everyday Dose can be easily mixed in with your regular coffee, lattes, smoothies, or any beverage you prefer. If you like your coffee creamier like me, this would be the best mushroom coffee brand. Their blend of Lion’s mane and Chaga is the perfect recipe to include in your morning routine to feel energized for the rest of the day. After trying this mushroom blend, I’ve experienced improved physical performance and overall health. Everyday Dose coffee tasted the best, in my opinion, because of how creamy it was. On the other hand, brands like Ryze and Mud Wtr are more like Chai lattes. Check out more of what we think here!

3. Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee

Pros:

A diverse assortment of goods is designed to meet all of your wellness needs.

Premium ingredients derived from sustainable farms.

Convenient single-serve packages for busy mornings when you’re rushing late for class.

A bold, rich flavor profile that will stimulate both your taste senses and your brain.

Some of Four Sigmatic’s flavors include Think w/ Lion’s Mane & Chaga, which reduces brain fog and stress levels, along with Chaga’s immunity and digestion boosters. Additionally, turkey tail mushrooms are included for their potential health benefits, particularly related to gut health and immunity.

Most mushroom coffees, including Four Sigmatic, fall within a typical price range, but there are value options available for budget-conscious consumers.

Cons:

The price point may be a bit pricey for us short of money students.

If you're not used to the flavor of mushrooms, it can be overpowering.

Quality Rating: 8.5/10.

Price: $$$.

Flavor: 8/10.

Four sigmatic was one of our favourite brands but the earthy taste was definitely there. Although, it really depends on how you make your coffee. You can blend foursigmatic with other ingredients to compliment your coffee and make the earthy mushroom flavour disappear. Four sigmatic is well known for its range of mushroom flavours. What I personally like most about Four Sigmatic is the variety of mushroom blends that help get you through the day. Some of Four Sigmatic's flavors include Think w/ Lion's Mane & Chaga which and reduces brain fog and reduces stress levels along with Chaga's immunity and digestion boosters. The Boost w/ Cordyceps & L-Theanine from Four Sigmatic helps keep your energy up throughout the day. If you don't like caffeine you can try The Decaf w/ Reishi & Chaga flavour is said to promote relaxation and reduce inflammation. The list goes on, but overall I'd recommend Four Sigmatic for their variety of mushroom blends that target certain health benefits. Check out more what we think here!

4. OM Mushrooms

Pros:

  • A variety of mushroom blends

  • .Great flavor

Cons:

  • Not the best quality

  • Availability varies according to where you reside, but you can still buy online

  • Quality Rating: 5/10.

  • Price: $$$.

  • Flavor: 8.5/10.

OM Mushrooms has been a very popular brand in the mushroom coffee niche, although their growing methods do not produce the highest quality mushrooms. If you are interested in a wide variety of flavors and like your coffee creamy, I'd recommend this brand for the taste. Other than that, they do not provide any lab tests, and their ingredients include mycelium grown on grain, which isn't the best way to cultivate mushrooms. I mixed the Master Blend by OM Mushrooms with some regular coffee, and I would say the caffeine boost was a lot cleaner than regular coffee which would make my brain fog worse. I'd recommend this brand if you are just looking for a cleaner caffeine boost; if you want to experience the actual benefits of the mushrooms I'd like for pore potent mushroom powders or extracts.

5. Mud/Wtr

Pros:

  • They provide vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO ingredients for the health-conscious student.

  • A warm, spicy flavor that will energize you without overpowering your taste buds.

  • Advertised as a coffee alternative due to low caffeine content

Cons:

  • Some may find the flavor too strong for their taste.

  • No caffeine in some products

Quality Rating: 8/10.

Price: $$.

Flavor: 8/10.

Mud/Wtr is one of the most popular mushroom coffee brands for your morning ritual because of its unique flavor. If you're more interested in the flavour of golden milk or chai latte, I'd recommend this brand. Their unique blend of mushrooms includes turmeric, cacao, cinnamon, and masala chai, giving it a unique spiced latte taste.

Mud Wtr's ingredients, like turmeric, are considered medicine in some cultures because of their huge benefits on liver problems, healing wounds or skin diseases, and inflammatory problems. As a result, you don't have to worry about the upset stomach and digestion problems that coffee usually causes.

I liked this brand because even though it was still on the earthy flavor side, it had a unique and smooth flavor. After drinking Mud/Wtr, I sustained and focused my energy throughout the day. Overall, it made me feel awesome. Therefore, if you are looking for a coffee alternative, I'd buy Mud Wtr today. Check out more what we think here!

Wild Foraged vs. Lab-Grown Mushrooms

When it comes to mushroom coffee, the source of the mushrooms can significantly impact the quality and potency of the final product. There are two main types of mushrooms used: wild foraged and lab-grown.

Wild Foraged Mushrooms: These mushrooms are harvested from their natural habitats, where they grow in the wild. Wild foraged mushrooms are often considered to be of higher quality and potency because they are exposed to a diverse range of nutrients and microorganisms in their natural environment. However, they can be more expensive and may have a more variable flavor and aroma due to the natural variations in their growing conditions.

Lab-Grown Mushrooms: On the other hand, lab-grown mushrooms are cultivated in controlled environments, ensuring consistency in flavor and aroma. These mushrooms are often more affordable and can be produced year-round. However, they may not have the same level of potency as wild foraged mushrooms, as they are grown in a more sterile and controlled setting.

Both types of mushrooms have their own advantages and can be used to create high-quality mushroom coffee. The choice between wild foraged and lab-grown mushrooms ultimately depends on your personal preferences and budget.

Potential Side Effects and Safety Concerns

While mushroom coffee is generally considered safe for most people, it's important to be aware of potential side effects and safety concerns:

  • Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may be allergic to certain types of mushrooms, which can cause symptoms such as hives, itching, and difficulty breathing. If you have a known mushroom allergy, it's best to avoid mushroom coffee.

  • Interactions with Medications: Mushroom coffee may interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners and diabetes medications. If you are taking any medications, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before adding mushroom coffee to your routine.

  • Caffeine Sensitivity: Although mushroom coffee typically contains about half the amount of caffeine as regular coffee, it can still cause symptoms such as jitteriness, anxiety, and insomnia in individuals who are sensitive to caffeine.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: There is limited research on the safety of mushroom coffee during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional before consuming mushroom coffee.

Overall, mushroom coffee is a unique and potentially beneficial beverage that combines the benefits of regular coffee with the potential health benefits of medicinal mushrooms. However, it's important to be aware of the potential side effects and safety concerns, and to consult with a healthcare professional before consuming it.

Best Mushroom Coffee for Weight Loss

If you're looking for a mushroom coffee alternative for weight loss Fungi Review recommends trying out Ryze Mushroom coffee. Their ingredients, like functional mushrooms and MCT oil can support weight loss. They also have pages that talk about their mushroom coffee blends and how they can enhance weight loss and support gut health. Here's a breakdown of how it can help:

More energy: Cordyceps and Resihi are energy boosters due to the vitamin b3 they contain. This promotes more energy throughout the day and encourages some to do physical activities, which is an imperative part of weight loss.

Nutrient packed: Ryze Mushroom coffee has all sorts of nutrients in their ground mushrooms. All these nutrients benefit your gut, which is critical in weight loss since a good functioning digestive system absorbs foods better.

Lion's Mane: Registered Dietitians have claimed that the Lion's Mane is the number one mushroom for weight loss. Lion's Mane helps with stress and anxiety, which can better random cravings and stress eating. Lion's Mane, along with reishi, also helps fall asleep easier and improves sleep quality, potentially leading to a more controlled appetite. Read this article from PubMed for more on this topic!

MCT oil: This supplement positively influences the brain and body, assisting the systems that keep your body functioning, which may help burn fat and enhance energy.

Choosing Mushroom Coffee Brands:

It is important to remember when choosing brands that medicinal mushrooms are not yet FDA-approved and are sold as dietary supplements. This leaves the consumer responsible for doing their own research on brands or talking to a doctor before giving it a try. Although clinical trials have shown positive results, everybody reacts differently to different supplements. Even though we recommend mushroom coffee as a good alternative to regular coffee, we recommend using pure mushroom powders or extracts to feel the full benefits. For more information on why mushrooms aren't FDA-approved, how to read lab reports, how to identify trustworthy brands, and more, check out our Fungi Purity & Potency Guide.

Caffeine Content

The caffeine content in mushroom coffee can vary widely depending on the brand and the specific blend used. Some mushroom coffees are designed to mimic the caffeine levels of regular coffee, while others contain significantly less or even no caffeine at all. On average, a serving of mushroom coffee typically contains between 20-50mg of caffeine, which is much lower than the 95mg found in a standard cup of regular coffee.

This reduced caffeine content can be beneficial for those looking to decrease their caffeine intake without sacrificing their morning ritual. For instance, mushroom coffee blends like those from Ryze and Mud Wtr offer a gentler energy boost, helping to avoid the jitters and crashes often associated with regular coffee. Additionally, some brands provide caffeine-free options, making it easier for individuals sensitive to caffeine to enjoy the health benefits of medicinal mushrooms without any adverse effects. Always check the label to understand the specific caffeine content of your chosen mushroom coffee.

Additional Ingredients

Many mushroom coffee brands enhance their products with additional ingredients to boost flavor and health benefits. These ingredients can transform a simple cup of mushroom coffee into a nutrient-packed beverage. Common additions include:

  • Coconut Milk: A popular non-dairy alternative that adds a creamy texture and rich flavor to mushroom coffee.

  • Spices and Herbs: Ingredients like cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric not only enhance the taste but also offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

  • Adaptogenic Herbs: Ashwagandha and rhodiola are often included for their stress-reducing and energy-boosting effects.

  • Other Botanicals: Ginseng and maca are added for their potential to improve stamina and overall vitality.

  • Natural Sweeteners: Stevia and monk fruit provide a touch of sweetness without the added calories or blood sugar spikes associated with regular sugar.

These additional ingredients can make mushroom coffee a versatile and enjoyable part of your daily routine, offering both delicious flavors and a range of potential health benefits. Always check the label to ensure the ingredients align with your dietary needs and preferences.
